Digital blackface is a term used to describe a digital blackhead effect.
It occurs when the user’s facial features are digitally blacked out, resulting in a face with a different colouration, and features like eyebrows and eyelashes are missing.
It’s also referred to as digital whiteface, because it is a form of whitening, in which the skin tone of the eyes is softened to create a more natural look.
The practice is often seen in movies and TV shows, and is most commonly used in anime and manga.
It can cause discomfort for some users, as well as discomfort for others, who may be used to having white skin.
The term is also often used by the public to identify people who look different, as it can cause them to be perceived as more “different”.
Digital whiteness is also sometimes referred to online as digital face whitening.
